We really can't ask for much more than that. But it does give you the luxury of more time to thoroughly learn a new server operating system and test your applications so that the rollout can be as smooth as possible. It includes NetWare 6.5 SP7, which supports running as a paravirtualized guest inside the Xen hypervisor and new Linux based version using SLES10. This doesn't, by the way, preclude your efforts to migrate your NetWare apps to a different platform. Some of Novells more perverse NetWare supporters have taken it upon themselves to petition Novell to keep NetWare in development.5 2.0 OES 2 was released on October 8, 2007. So you will need to test your apps to see if they will run in this space as (in my estimation) this is the version that will be supported for the long term. Remember that, with the next version of Open Enterprise Server, NetWare will run as a virtualized session on the SuSE Linux platform. Now this probably doesn't mean you can continue to run a stand-alone NetWare server forever. But if you are running NetWare to support particular applications, and if those applications will run on 6.5 then you are assured that you can continue to run them with Novell's support ad infinitum. That doesn't mean there will be newer versions of NetWare there won't be - 6.5 is the end of the line. That's as unequivocal as you can get, in my estimation.

If you want to continue to run on NetWare, I would encourage you to upgrade to 6.5." A news story by the IDG News Service quotes Messman as saying: "We will support NetWare at least through 2015." He adds: "We will support NetWare 6.5 for as long as customers want to support it. In the strongest statement we've heard from the Novell CEO in years, support for the next 9 years, at least, seems assured. One typical example, in the U.K.'s Computer Weekly, proclaimed "Novell to support NetWare users until 2015." But is that what he actually said?Īctually, it is. Many computer publications sported headlines encapsulating, supposedly, Messman's remarks from his BrainShare keynote speech. The replacement is Open Enterprise Server. What did Novell CEO Jack Messman at last week's BrainShare actually say about NetWare? NetWare 6.5SP8 General Support ended in 2010 Extended Support was available until the end of 2015, and Self Support until the end of 2017.

The final update release was version 6.5SP8 of May 2009 NetWare is no longer on Novell's product list. The successor to NetWare, Open Enterprise Server (OES), released in March 2005, offers all the services previously hosted by NetWare 6.5, but on a SUSE Linux Enterprise Server the NetWare kernel remained an option until OES 11 in late 2011. The directory service, along with a new e-mail system ( GroupWise), application configuration suite ( ZENworks), and security product ( BorderManager) were all targeted at the needs of large enterprises.īy 2000, however, Microsoft was taking more of Novell's customer base and Novell increasingly looked to a future based on a Linux kernel.

In 1993, the main NetWare product line took a dramatic turn when version 4 introduced NetWare Directory Services (NDS, later renamed eDirectory), a global directory service based on ISO X.500 concepts (seven years later, Microsoft released Active Directory, which lacked the tree structure and time synchronization of NDS).

In 1991, Novell introduced cheaper peer-to-peer networking products for DOS and Windows, unrelated to their server-centric NetWare. From the beginning NetWare implemented a number of features inspired by mainframe and minicomputer systems that were not available in its competitors' products.

The company soon moved away from building its own hardware, and NetWare became hardware-independent, running on any suitable Intel-based IBM PC compatible system, and able to utilize a wide range of network cards. The original NetWare product in 1983 supported clients running both CP/M and MS-DOS, ran over a proprietary star network topology and was based on a Novell-built file server using the Motorola 68000 processor.
